How to clean and rewick your coils

MTN Coils UK Ni80 Five-core SFCs, wicked and loaded in Twisted Messes 24 Pro RDA.

The inevitable chore. Are you someone that rewicks all of your atomisers on a leisurely Sunday afternoon, or as-and-when your coils need a clean? Whatever your schedule, it's something that needs to be done; MTN are here with a few tips and can even extend the time between maintenance. This week, we go into how to clean your coils and make them last longer!

"One pair of MTNs is easily a year's worth of vaping for one device. Or you can give someone else £10 per month every month because their shit sucks".

Why do coils need cleaning?

With every press of the fire button, you're vaporising (mhmm, yep, believe it or not) your favourite e-liquid, but there will always be a few particulates of residue that sticks to your coils. Think of this as browning off chicken in a pan and being left with a fond (those little browned bits of food that stick to the bottom of the pan or skillet), except the "fond" that sticks to your coils is made of sugars and sweeteners. With use, more and more of this leftover funk collects on your coils, contributing to that "burnt toast" taste, or what my partner likes to describe as "absolute dog".

"My Stags have been going for a year with no issues."

How to clean your coils.

When your coils are giving an "off" taste, it's time for a little maintenance. If you're using an RDA or RTA, it can take a matter of minutes to swap out some wicks and return to the intoxicating bite of pure and precise flavour. RBAs are a inherently arduous but they have their perks, which we'll get to in a future post.

  • Empty and disassemble your tank

  • Carefully remove your wicks

  • Set your wattage as low as possible (usually 5 for MTL and Boro, and 20 for dual-coils)

  • Gently heat your coils, never glowing hotter than a deep red-orange colour

  • If any residue remains, a simple dip in running water (just the coils, no important electronics) should wash away any gunk

  • If required, use a tiny brass brush to carefully remove any stubborn clumps

  • Gently heat your coils to work out any hot spots

  • Pop some new wicks in! See our favourites here.

How to rewick coils less frequently!

Some people find re-wicking quite therapeutic; the task offers a moment of peace amongst the chaos, granting the chance to hide away for a few minutes and focus on a fiddly, yet infinitely rewarding task. Like it or not, it needs to be done, so take your time to follow the above steps carefully.

Now, MTN Coils are crafted with this task in mind; our incredibly fine Twisted Messes fuse wires not only yield greater performance, but also reduce the build up of gunks as more of your e-liquid is being vaporised; we've done our part to keep this easy for you, but you need to keep on top of it. As soon as you notice any browning on your wicks or get a hint of an off taste, it's time to break your gear down and give your coils some love.

Keeping liquid in your wicks can also have an affect on this, so try to dry off your cotton before a period of disuse; vaping a tank almost empty before calling it a night will have a small effect on lifespan.

"My Billet coils reached 100,000 puffs after a year of use!"

Of course, these are all guidelines and your use will have the biggest impact on lifespan. Using sugary e-liquids and dry-burning your coils to melting point will break down the materials much faster, so stop doing what all YouTube reviewers do. Seriously, it's a bad habit. Glowing your coils this hot is as pugnacious as checking your fingernails after a secret scratch. Stop it.
